Eucharistic — The Eucharistic Miracle of Niervaart

The Eucharistic Miracle of Niervaart
c. 1300 · Niervaart (translated to Breda 1449), Netherlands
Status: approved holy see

Around 1300 a peat-cutter named Jan Bautoen was working the marshes near Niervaart (in modern North Brabant) when his spade struck what proved to be a consecrated host buried in the peat. The host immediately began to bleed where the iron had touched it. The bishop of Liège authenticated the relic; the local cult began. In 1449, with Niervaart in decline, the relic was solemnly translated to the Grote Kerk (Great Church) of Breda, where it became the Heilig Sacrament van Niervaart. The annual procession through Breda continues.
