Eucharistic — The Eucharistic Miracle of O Cebreiro

The Eucharistic Miracle of O Cebreiro
c. 1300 (14th century) · Santa María a Real, O Cebreiro, Spain
Status: approved holy see

On the high pass of O Cebreiro in Galicia — the spot where pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago first enter Galicia from León — sometime in the early 14th century, a peasant named Juan Santín climbed up through a winter storm to attend Mass at the small Romanesque church of Santa María a Real. The priest, irritated by what he saw as the peasant's foolishness in coming through the snow for so little, was contemptuous as he consecrated the elements.

At the consecration the wine in the chalice and the host on the paten were both visibly transformed — the wine into liquid blood, the host into flesh. The peasant fell prostrate. The relics were preserved in the church and are still kept there in a precious silver reliquary given by Isabella the Catholic and Ferdinand of Aragon on their own Camino pilgrimage. O Cebreiro is one of the most-visited stops on the modern Camino de Santiago.
