Old Testament — Peter and John at the Beautiful Gate

Peter and John at the Beautiful Gate
c. AD 33 · Beautiful Gate of the Temple, Jerusalem, Israel
Status: approved holy see

Peter and John were going up to the Temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer (3 p.m.). At the Beautiful Gate sat a man lame from birth, carried there daily to beg from those entering the Temple. He asked Peter and John for alms. Peter fixed his eyes on him: 'Look at us.' The man looked, expecting to receive something.

Peter said: 'I have no silver or gold, but what I have I give you; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.' He took him by the right hand and raised him up. Immediately his feet and ankles were made strong; he leaped up and stood and walked, entering the Temple with them walking and leaping and praising God. The crowd recognised him as the lame beggar, and ran together to Solomon's Portico. Peter preached the first apostolic sermon of healing: it was not by their own power, but by faith in the name of Jesus, that the man had been healed.
