On the feast of the Annunciation 1245, a consecrated host at the church of San Longino in Porto-Mantovano (just outside Mantua) gave forth three vials worth of fresh blood. The relic was translated to the Cathedral of Mantua, where it was placed beside an older relic of the Holy Blood reputedly brought to Mantua by St. Longinus, the soldier who pierced Christ's side. The two relics together became the spiritual centre of the city.
