In the 7th century, a priest at the ancient church of Santa Maria in Via Lata in Rome — one of the diaconal churches of the Aventine, where tradition holds St. Paul lived during his Roman captivity — saw the consecrated host transform into living, bleeding flesh while celebrating Mass. The phenomenon, preserved in early Roman martyrologies, was one of the foundational Eucharistic events of the Roman Church. The relic was preserved at the church.
