Eucharistic — The Holy Blood of Saint-Mihiel

The Holy Blood of Saint-Mihiel
14th century cult · Abbey of Saint-Mihiel, Lorraine, France
Status: approved holy see

The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Mihiel in Lorraine — founded in 709 and a major medieval intellectual centre — preserves a small Holy Blood relic associated with a 14th-century Eucharistic phenomenon during a plague that devastated the region. The abbey's daily Mass for the deliverance of the population reportedly saw the consecrated wine in the chalice coagulate visibly into blood. The abbey was suppressed at the French Revolution but the relic survived; the cult was confirmed by the local bishop and the abbey church (now parish) preserves it.
