On December 9, 1970, at the small Bavarian village of Stich near Eichendorf, the parish priest of the Pfarrkirche Mariä Geburt was preparing for evening adoration when he noticed dark red stains on the corporal cloth that had been used at the morning Mass — stains that had not been there earlier. Bishop Rudolf Graber of Regensburg opened a formal inquiry. Laboratory analysis at the University of Mainz Institute of Forensic Medicine identified the substance as human blood. The bishop confirmed the local cult.
