Eucharistic — The Eucharistic Miracle of Trani

The Eucharistic Miracle of Trani
c. 1000 · Church of San Andrea, Trani (Apulia), Italy
Status: approved holy see

Around the year 1000 in the Apulian port city of Trani, a consecrated host was secretly removed from the cathedral and brought to a private kitchen. As it was placed in a frying pan over the fire, the host began to bleed and to expand; the blood splashed the walls. The witnesses present were converted on the spot and brought the relic to the bishop. The bloodied host has been preserved at the Church of Sant'Andrea in Trani for over a thousand years. (As with several medieval Eucharistic miracle narratives involving Jewish neighbours, this story was historically used in anti-Jewish polemic; the modern Church rejects such uses and presents it as an account of grace and conversion.)
