On January 31, 1906, a massive undersea earthquake off the Pacific coast of Colombia (magnitude 8.8) threatened the small port of Tumaco with a tsunami. As the sea visibly receded — the unmistakable warning that a tidal wave is coming — Augustinian Recollect Father Gerardo Larrondo took the monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament from the parish church and carried it down to the shore. He raised the monstrance toward the approaching wave.

The wave reached the beach, halted at the priest's feet, and receded. The town was spared. The Apostolic Vicariate of Tumaco confirmed the local cult; the event is recorded in detailed depositions by surviving witnesses.
