In 1472 the Tuscan city of Volterra was brutally sacked by Florentine mercenaries under the orders of Lorenzo de' Medici. In the wreckage of the cathedral, a small ciborium of consecrated hosts was found undamaged and, when reopened, was found to show signs of bleeding on the larger hosts within. The relic was preserved and the cathedral rebuilt around it.
