Eucharistic — The Holy Blood of Weingarten

The Holy Blood of Weingarten
translated to Weingarten 1094 · Weingarten Basilica, Germany
Status: approved holy see

The Benedictine abbey of Weingarten in Upper Swabia received a relic of the Holy Blood of Christ in 1094 from Judith of Flanders, widow of Welf I of Bavaria. The relic, by tradition, had been gathered at Calvary by St. Longinus the centurion, brought to Mantua, divided in the 11th century, and brought to Weingarten by way of the Imperial court.

Since 1529 the relic has been carried on horseback through the surrounding countryside by some 3,000 riders on the Friday after the feast of the Ascension. The Blutritt ('Blood Ride') is the largest Eucharistic equestrian procession in the world.
