Prayer — Eucharistic & Heart of Jesus

Actus Consecrationis Sacratissimo Cordi Iesu

Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

by Pope Leo XIII

The great act by which Leo XIII consecrated the entire human race to the Sacred Heart on the first day of the twentieth century — renewed annually on the Solemnity of Christ the King and prayed by individuals and families for their own consecration.

The Prayer
English · Original
Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race,
look down upon us, humbly prostrate before Thy altar.
We are Thine, and Thine we wish to be;
but to be more surely united with Thee,
behold each one of us freely consecrates himself today
to Thy Most Sacred Heart.

Many indeed have never known Thee;
many too, despising Thy precepts, have rejected Thee.
Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus,
and draw them to Thy Sacred Heart.

Be Thou King, O Lord, not only of the faithful
who have never forsaken Thee,
but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned Thee.
Grant that they may quickly return to their Father's house,
lest they perish of wretchedness and hunger.

Be Thou King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions,
or whom discord keeps aloof,
and call them back to the harbour of truth and the unity of faith,
so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd.

Grant, O Lord, to Thy Church
assurance of freedom and immunity from harm;
give peace and order to all nations,
and make the earth resound from pole to pole
with one cry: Praise be to the divine Heart that wrought our salvation;
to It be glory and honour for ever.
Amen.
When the Prayer is Said

On the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart (Friday after the Octave of Corpus Christi); on the Solemnity of Christ the King; on First Fridays; for personal and family consecration to the Sacred Heart.

History & Background

On May 25, 1899, Pope Leo XIII issued the encyclical Annum Sacrum, in which he announced the consecration of the entire human race to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus — to be solemnly performed on June 11 of that year (the Feast of the Sacred Heart) and renewed on the first day of the new century. He called it 'the greatest act of my pontificate.' The pope had been moved by a letter from Bl. Mary of the Divine Heart Droste zu Vischering, a German Visitation sister who had received an interior locution from Christ asking for the act of consecration.

Pius XI, in his encyclical Miserentissimus Redemptor (1928), prescribed the annual renewal of this consecration on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart (the Friday after the Octave of Corpus Christi). Pius XII, in Haurietis Aquas (1956), gave the most extensive papal teaching on the devotion to the Sacred Heart. The act is now prayed in parishes throughout the world on that day, and is the standard form for personal and family consecration to the Sacred Heart.

Indulgences Attached

A plenary indulgence is granted on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart for the public recitation of this act, under the usual conditions; partial otherwise (Enchiridion of Indulgences, no. 3).
