Daily Offering to the Sacred Heart

1844, Fr. François-Xavier Gautrelet SJ; current expanded form 1861

The classic Morning Offering of the Apostleship of Prayer — uniting the day's prayers, works, joys, and sufferings with the Sacrifice of the Mass and with the intentions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Prayer
English · Original
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
I offer You
my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings
of this day
in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
throughout the world.

I offer them for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart:
the salvation of souls,
reparation for sin,
the reunion of all Christians.

I offer them for the intentions
of our Bishops and of all Apostles of Prayer,
and in particular
for the intentions of the Holy Father this month.
Amen.
When the Prayer is Said

Upon rising each morning, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world.

History & Background

The Daily Offering grew out of the Apostleship of Prayer, founded in 1844 at the Jesuit seminary of Vals-près-le-Puy in France. The young Jesuits there were encouraged each morning to offer the day in advance to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through the hands of Mary, uniting their ordinary actions to the daily sacrifice of the Mass.

The practice spread to the universal Church and is now the foundational prayer of the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network (the renamed Apostleship of Prayer). Each month the Holy Father publishes intentions which are united with the daily offering of the faithful — making it one of the simplest and most powerful ways for an ordinary Catholic to participate daily in the Church's universal mission.
