The Prayer · Multiple Versions
Latin · Original
Memorare, O piissima Virgo Maria,
non esse auditum a saeculo,
quemquam ad tua currentem praesidia,
tua implorantem auxilia, tua petentem suffragia,
esse derelictum.
Ego tali animatus confidentia,
ad te, Virgo Virginum, Mater, curro,
ad te venio, coram te gemens peccator assisto.
Noli, Mater Verbi, verba mea despicere,
sed audi propitia et exaudi.
Amen.
English
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known
that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help, or sought thy intercession
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;
to thee do I come,
before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.
Spanish
Acordaos,
oh piadosísima Virgen María,
que jamás se ha oído decir
que ninguno de los que han acudido
a tu protección,
implorando tu asistencia
y reclamando tu socorro,
haya sido abandonado de ti.
Animado con esta confianza,
a ti también acudo, oh Madre,
Virgen de las vírgenes,
y aunque gimiendo
bajo el peso de mis pecados,
me atrevo a comparecer
ante tu presencia soberana.
No deseches mis humildes súplicas,
oh Madre del Verbo divino,
antes bien, escúchalas
y acógelas benignamente. Amén
Italian
Amen.
Portuguese
Lembrai-vos, ó puríssima Virgem Maria,
que nunca se ouviu dizer que algum
daqueles que tenha recorrido à Vossa protecção,
implorado a Vossa assistência e reclamado o Vosso socorro,
me prostro aos Vossos pés.
Não desprezeis as minhas súplicas,
ó Mãe do Filho de Deus humanado,
French
Souvenez-vous, ô très miséricordieuse
Vierge Marie, qu’on n’a jamais entendu dire
me prosterne à vos pieds. Ô Mère du Verbe,
ne méprisez pas mes prières, mais accueillez-
les favorablement et daignez les exaucer.
Amen.
German
Amen.
When the Prayer is Said

In any urgent need or crisis; in the daily devotions of many religious orders.

History & Background

The Memorare in its current form was not actually written by St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153), to whom it is traditionally attributed, but circulated widely under his name from the early modern period onward. The text appears to have been composed or finalized by the French priest Claude Bernard (1588–1641), called the 'Poor Priest,' who used it constantly in his apostolate to the prisoners of Paris.

St. Claude de la Colombière (1641–1682), the spiritual director of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, made the prayer widely known by his promotion of it, and it has been one of the most beloved petitions to the Blessed Virgin ever since.
