Prayer — Novenas

Novena to St. Joseph

Indulgenced by Pius IX, 26 November 1876; prayers from Blessed Be God (1925) and the Raccolta (1910)

The nine days before 19 March: the indulgenced novena prayer with its sevenfold versicle for the seven sorrows and joys, and the Memorare to St. Joseph — 'never has it been heard that anyone ever invoked thy protection… without being consoled.'

The Prayer
English · Original
PRAYER (each day)
O glorious St. Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, to thee do we raise our hearts and hands to implore thy powerful intercession in obtaining from the benign Heart of Jesus all the helps and graces necessary for our spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death, and the special favour we now implore. (Here name it.) O guardian of the Word Incarnate, we feel animated with confidence that thy prayers in our behalf will be graciously heard before the throne of God.

Then the following versicle and response are said seven times, in honour of the seven sorrows and seven joys of St. Joseph:
V. O glorious St. Joseph, through the love thou dost bear to Jesus Christ, and for the glory of His name,
R. Hear our prayers and obtain our petitions.

O glorious St. Joseph, spouse of the immaculate Virgin, obtain for me a pure, humble, and charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the divine will. Be my guide, father, and model through life, that I may merit to die as thou didst in the arms of Jesus and Mary.
St. Joseph, friend of the Sacred Heart, pray for us.

MEMORARE TO ST. JOSEPH
Remember, most pure spouse of Mary ever Virgin, my loving protector, St. Joseph, that never has it been heard that anyone ever invoked thy protection, or besought aid of thee, without being consoled. In this confidence I come before thee, I fervently recommend myself to thee. Despise not my prayer, foster-father of our Redeemer, but do thou in thy pity receive it. Amen.

V. Pray for us, holy Joseph.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.
O God, who in thine ineffable providence didst vouchsafe to choose blessed Joseph to be the spouse of thy most holy Mother; grant, we beseech thee, that we may have him for our intercessor in heaven, whom on earth we venerate as our holy protector. Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.
When the Prayer is Said

10–18 March; 22–30 April before St. Joseph the Worker; on Wednesdays; for a happy death, for fathers, for work.

History & Background

Pius IX, who declared Joseph Patron of the Universal Church in 1870, indulgenced the novena in his honour with three hundred days each day and a plenary indulgence during the novena or on one of the eight days following, for any approved form of prayer. American parishes used the form printed here from Blessed Be God, whose versicle is said seven times for the seven sorrows and seven joys of the saint. The Memorare to St. Joseph, an Italian adaptation of St. Bernard's, was indulgenced by Pius IX on 26 June 1863 and is the Raccolta's text.

The novena is made from 10 to 18 March before the solemnity, or before 1 May, or at any time; Wednesday is the day of the week the Church gives to St. Joseph.

A novena is nine consecutive days (or nine consecutive weeks of one fixed day) of the same prayer for the same intention; a day missed breaks it, and it is begun again. Confession and Communion during the nine days, or on the last, were the ordinary conditions for the plenary indulgence.
