O divine Jesus, the Spouse of virgins, and eternal rewarder of those who are so happy as to leave all on earth that they may find all in heaven, look down we beseech Thee on us with eyes of mercy. We assemble here to thank Thee for the favours bestowed on our blessed Foundress and Patroness St. Clare, to acknowledge how deeply we are indebted to Thy eternal predilection for being ranked among her children, and to implore through Thy compassionate heart, and her intercession, our present petitions. And thou, O illustrious patroness of Poor Clares! Seraphic spouse of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the sacrament of His love; thou didst early select that adorable sanctuary for thy refuge and dwelling. There thy angelic soul was perfectly purified, there thou wert enriched by a sublime gift of heavenly contemplation. In that furnace of eternal love where thy merit was consummated and all thy sacrifices rewarded, thou didst enjoy an anticipated paradise. O holy Mother St. Clare, thou knowest by thy own happy experience that it is sweet to serve God, despising this world; deign then to consider and provide for the spiritual and temporal wants of every member of this community. May we all not alone bear thy name, but imitate thy virtues. Obtain for us that holy spirit of poverty for which thou wert so signally distinguished, and which detached thee from all things created; that perfect obedience which left thee no will but the will of thy crucified Spouse; and an ardent devotion to the adorable sacrament of the altar. Amen. O blessed saint, who didst give thyself so early to Jesus, grant that I may imitate thy blessed example, as far as my state in life will permit, and that I may never prove a hindrance, either in word or deed, to any who desire to consecrate themselves to God, as thou didst. Oh! dear saint, whose very name is light, and whose heart was ever full of such tender love to Jesus crucified, obtain for me the grace of divine light and guidance in all my undertakings, and of such ardent love of my adorable Saviour that I may be willing, nay rather that I may prefer to endure any suffering sooner than offend Him, even by a wilful imperfection. Amen.
Prayer to St. Clare of Assisi
To the girl who ran away from home on Palm Sunday night to be given the habit by Francis, and who never went outside the walls of San Damiano again for forty-one years.
On 11 August; before the Blessed Sacrament; for those discerning a vocation, and for anyone opposed by their family in following it.
Clare Offreduccio was eighteen when she left her father's house at Assisi on the night of Palm Sunday 1212, met Francis and his brothers at the Portiuncula by torchlight, and had her hair cut off. Her family came to drag her back and failed. She lived at San Damiano until 1253 and never left it, ruling the first community of women in the Franciscan movement and fighting three popes for the right to be as poor as the friars — a right finally conceded to her in writing two days before she died.
This prayer is the Poor Clares' own, printed in their English manual of 1863, and it prays as women inside an enclosure pray: for the spirit of poverty that detached her from all created things, for the obedience 'which left thee no will but the will of thy crucified Spouse', and for devotion to the Blessed Sacrament — which she carried to the wall of the convent when the Saracen mercenaries came over it, and they went away.
