St. Alphonsus Liguori — founder of the Redemptorists earlier that same year at the nearby convent of Scala — was celebrating Mass for the contemplative nuns of the Most Holy Saviour of Scala in August 1732. At the elevation of the host he entered into a deep ecstasy. The host, according to several witnesses, remained visibly suspended above the chalice for some minutes while Alphonsus stood motionless. The event was recorded in the cause for his canonization (1839).
